Skeerpoort Valley
By Voets Toets Hiking SA
Voets Toets Hiking SA ventured out to explore Vergenoeg Nature Reserve & Hiking Trail, situated in the Skeerpoort Valley on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain range near Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West Province.
The trail winds its
way up the mountainside through savanna and woodland. Once you reach the gorge, the route becomes more technical, requiring some scrambling with the help of tree roots, ropes and chains to make your way up to the ridgeline. At the top, you'll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the Skeerpoort Valley and Hartbeespoort Dam.
The trail at the top consists of two loops, forming a figure-eight route. You'll also pass the vulture colony, where you may spot Cape Vultures soaring around the cliffs. The descent brings its own challenges, with loose rocks and steep sections requiring extra care.
This is not a beginner-friendly hike, as the rocky, technical sections require your full attention. My preferred Merrell Agility Peak 6 trail runners provided plenty of grip and all-day comfort. A trekking pole is recommended, along with plenty of water, snacks and sun protection.
