Shelter Rock Adventures is situated in the Magaliesburg mountain range, just a stone's throw away from JHB. This trail is one of our favourites as its breathtaking view from the top of the mountain is truly spectacular! Shelter Rock is named after a colossal boulder that broke free from the Magaliesberg cliff face around 10,000 years ago. Visible from kilometres away, this historic landmark holds stories of resilience, such as:
-During the Great War of 1898–1903, locals sought refuge at Shelter Rock.
-In 1820, it provided sanctuary during Mzilikazi’s Zulu invasion of the area.

Route:
We rated this trail as moderate. It starts with a flat trail that takes you through a shaded kloof. The trail then begins to ascend the mountainside. It's a rocky trail, so good balance and steady footwork are essential. It provides a good cardio workout, especially on the incline heading towards the top of the mountain. Once at the top, you'll be blown away by the beautiful views, and suddenly, all the hard climbing feels worth it!

Field Notes:
We recommend a hiking stick to navigate your way around the rockier areas. Our preferred Merrell hiking boots gave us the support and grip needed along the route. Sunscreen, adequate hydration, and a few snacks to enjoy on top of the mountain were on our list.
