Sunday’s River

By Suzanna Pautz - Take A Walk Hiking Club

Colchester

Golden sand dunes line the banks of the Sundays River mouth, where this 250km-long river runs into the ocean.

Serene, easy route

Merrell shoes; sun protection and adequate hydration

Route:

Our group followed a route from the day visitor area near the entrance, along a dirt road and onto the beach sand at the river mouth. It was an out-and-back route of about 10km in total. We judged it to be an easy walk, as there is not much elevation. We saw signs for a "walking trail", but the path was very overgrown and not walkable at all. However, this didn't detract from the serenity of the wide river and towering sand dunes around us.

Near the ocean, the river creates a large lagoon, which was a perfect spot for a rest and snack break.

Field Notes:

There is no cover along the route, so be sure to bring hats, sun protection, and plenty of water. It's not advisable to swim here, as the current is quite strong. The Merrell Agility Peaks were the perfect shoes to keep our feet cool on the sandy trail.

The birders in our group were excited to see Sacred Ibis and Spoonbill.

Trail Log:

The area at the mouth of the Sundays River is operated by Pearson Park Resort. Permits cost R50 (2026 rates), and the reception area can get a little busy over weekends, as the Sundays River is popular with fishermen and campers. The gates open at 7am. There is a day visitor area with ablutions and a braai area.
