Tugela Gorge Trail

By Voets Toets Hiking

Drakensberg

Voets Toets Hiking ventured out to explore one of South Africa's best day hikes, the Tugela Gorge Trail, situated in the Royal Natal National Park, Northern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal.

17km trail on offer

Intermediate

Moderate and scenic route

Merrell Hiking Boots, rain gear, energy snacks, a trekking pole and adequate hydration

Route:

We started early from the gorge parking area and made our way along a relatively flat path in the rain. We proceeded past the Policeman’s Helmet rock formation, a protea field, and through a few indigenous forests before dropping into the gorge around the 7km mark.

We continued upstream, boulder hopping and crossing the river a few times before reaching the tunnel entrance. Making our way through the tunnel was no easy task, as we had to swim through two ice-cold pools while navigating slippery rocks. We reached the final section, where we were rewarded with epic views of the Drakensberg in front of us.

We headed back out and stopped for a lunch break. Once done, we proceeded up a ladder and climbed to the Amphitheatre Cave. Here, the clouds opened up briefly, and we were rewarded with a stunning view of the Tugela Falls. We made our way back down and continued along the trail, meeting a few avid hikers on the way back.

Field Notes:

Our preferred Merrell hiking boots kept us dry and comfortable along the drenched trail. A trekking pole came in handy, especially when boulder hopping. Rain gear was essential on the day due to the wet conditions. Snacks and hydration are always recommended.

Trail Log:

There are plenty of hikes to do in the Royal Natal National Park, but the Gorge Trail hits differently, with views of the dramatic Amphitheatre, river crossings, boulder hopping, and indigenous forests. Few hikes maintain that level of visual impact from start to finish. This is a must-do hike, and we highly recommend it the next time you visit the area.
