Pretoria
Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never plan. Voetstoetshiking ventured off to Pretoria to explore the Voortrekker Monument Nature Reserve. What was supposed to be a hike with history turned out to be our first-ever parkrun experience.
3km and 5km trail on offer
Easy route with stunning views
Merrell trail runners, sunscreen, sun protection and hydration
We joined about two hundred eager runners and walkers at the bottom of the stairs below the monument, where the parkrun starts. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was welcoming and energetic. The volunteers were friendly, encouraging, and clearly passionate about creating a great experience for everyone.
The route itself is anything but boring. It winds through beautiful surroundings with stunning views across Pretoria. It's a relatively easy route with only one hill to challenge us. Fortunately, the supportive atmosphere and encouragement from fellow participants made every step worthwhile.
What stood out most was the sense of community. Everyone was there for the same reason: to get outdoors, be active, and enjoy the morning together.
Follow The Route
Lucky for us, we were wearing our preferred Merrell trail runners instead of our usual hiking boots. Although it was a perfect winter morning, sunscreen and sun protection were still recommended. It was a short route, so not much hydration was needed. The venue has a restaurant on-site where one can grab a cappuccino or a bite to eat after completing a run or walk.
Join Our Hiking ClubThe venue has a variety of attractions to explore around the grounds, including Fort Schanskop, the Wall of Remembrance, as well as the heritage gardens surrounding the historic monument. Inside the monument, one can explore the Hall of Heroes, Cenotaph Hall, and the dome viewing area.
Not every trail needs hiking boots. Sometimes, all you need is a pair of running shoes and a willingness to say yes to an unexpected adventure.
