Route:

There are 6 hiking trails on offer, varying in length from 2 to 12 km. Our favourite route is a combination of Oppi Koppi, Nguni, and the Waterfall trail. It is a loop of 8kms. You’ll find a map on their website, and you can also get a physical map from reception. The trails are very well marked with brightly coloured blocks of wood hanging from trees. Unlike most trails where you are watching your feet for painted footprints, keep your eyes up for the painted blocks.

Starting from the campground, we head out on the Oppi Koppi trail (RED). Passing an old coal mine, the trail goes steeply uphill. Once we are ‘op die koppie’, we stop at the viewpoint for a short break. We then take the Nguni trail (GREY) down the hill and cross the river to the Waterfall trail (BLUE)

The waterfall is a sight to behold! There is a small beach area where we had our picnic, and if you’re feeling brave, you can take a refreshing dip. You can climb up the left-hand side of the waterfall to find another smaller waterfall above. There are some ropes to assist. Be careful, it can be quite slippery. Merrells with grippy Vibram soles are much needed here. It is 1km from the waterfall back to the campground where we started.

Field Notes:

Bring a hiking stick as the total elevation is 365m. Sun protection is needed for the Oppi Koppi trail as it is quite open, but the Waterfall trail is cool and shady.

Trail Log:

The Bergrivier farm has been in the same family for generations since 1855. Accommodation from camping to chalets is available, but the most iconic has to be the Ox Wagons. You can stay in a converted ox wagon that was used to transport fruit to the Port Elizabeth harbour in the 1900s.

A day hike permit is R60 (2025 rates), Contact Dorie on 083 230 6910 to book. Other activities at Bergrivier are 4x4 trails, birdwatching, and stargazing. More info can be found on their website, bergrivier.com.
