Route:

Cairn loop feels like a Goldilocks Trail - It’s not too short, not too long. It’s not too flat, not too steep. It’s just right. And hiking through coastal fynbos with views of the mountains and the ocean definitely feels like we’re in a fairy tale.

All trails start at Crossways Country Kitchen. Snap a pic of the map on the trailhead board before heading out. Next it is extremely important to begin your hike going through Bluegums Farm where you will dip your feet in sanitizer. The trail goes through pristine dairy farmland and this is for the protection of the livestock.

For Cairn Loop follow the red arrow trail markers. The trail follows farm roads until ascending steeply up to the high point of Cairn Loop. At the top we stop for a snack break and take in the panoramic views of Jeffreys bay and distant mountains.

The trail then loops between 2 peaks and goes steeply down to a dam; another photo stop. Back on level ground the trail goes down a tree lined path called Puttergil lane and joins up with the farm roads back to the dairy.

Field Notes:

As the trail ascends and descends pretty steeply you will need shoes with good grip. My Merrell Agility Peak 5’s with Vibram soles are a game changer for me. I feel confident on the slopes. There is 400m of elevation gain, so a trekking pole is also helpful. Bring sun protection as most of the trail is exposed, especially up on the mountain. Bring enough water, there is nowhere to fill up on trail. Remember mountains are usually 5-10 degrees hotter than the forecast.

Trail Log:

A 3Rivers Trails Day permit is R70. Cash or Zapper are accepted. Your permit is also your indemnity, and you need to carry it with you on the trail. You can complete this at the trailhead board. No dogs allowed and no smoking. Group size is limited to 20.

A meal at Crossways Country Kitchen is a great way to end your hike, with many options for the hungry hiker.
