Route:

There is one main trail on offer, the 6km Nyala Trail. This self-guided, circular bush walk starts at the reception area. As we began our hike, we immediately came across a bull giraffe, who stood confidently for photographs. We spotted zebra, impala, and black impala. The reserve is also home to blue wildebeest, kudu, nyala, and waterbuck, but they were well hidden on the day.

The trail is well marked with yellow ribbons and painted yellow blocks hanging from trees. The first section is single track, weaving in and out of small clearings. It then follows a jeep track up a steep hill before looping back to the start.

After our hike, we enjoyed a picnic overlooking the reserve and the surrounding hills. Kaya, a wildlife volunteer, then took us on a guided tour of the lion sanctuary. It was awe-inspiring to see the big cats up close. They are securely housed in their enclosures, and we stood at a safe distance while hearing the story behind each rescued lion (and one tiger). The sanctuary tour takes approximately 1½ hours.

Field Notes:

We have hiked this trail during both drought and rainy seasons, and on both occasions there were sections that were very wet and muddy. A trekking pole will help on the slippery sections. We were grateful to have our Moab Speed 2 waterproof boots, as in some places our feet were sinking into the mud.
