Route:

There are 8 trails on offer. Our group did a combination of the River trail, Boulder trail and Forest Trail to make a total of 7km.

We started on the River walk. This section is the most exposed, so it’s best to do it early morning before it gets too hot. This is also where you will see most of the proteas. The trail splits, with the Boulder trail heading further down into the valley. We stopped at a cave and enjoyed the views of the valley. The Boulder trail section is the most technical, with some steep, rocky scrambles.

Once we climbed back up from the valley, we came to a large picnic spot with tables where we rested and enjoyed our snacks.

The trail continues underneath the N2 highway. This is a great place for photos and to marvel at the engineering of the Van Stadens bridge.

Field Notes:

Bring plenty of water as there are no streams along the route. You’ll need sun protection and hats, especially on the River Trail, as there is no tree cover. Be sure to wear shoes with good grip like the Merrell Agility Peak’s for the rocky terrain.

Trail Log:

It is a popular hiking destination on the weekends, and it’s great for families due to the shorter trails and picnic areas. All the trails are very well marked. There is no cost and gates open at 7am in summer and 7:30am in winter.
