Once the trail briefing was completed, we received a map and made our way along the well-marked route. It starts by winding through grassy hills and patches of indigenous woodland. The first few kilometres were gentle climbs, with scenic views over the surrounding valleys. 

After the initial section, the trail begins descending towards the Bankspruit Gorge.

The route leads one up the gorge into dense indigenous forest, rewarding us with rock pools, river crossings, and towering cliffs. We reached the highlight of the trail, the Uitkoms Waterfall. A sight to behold as we stood at the base, being showered with spray. 

The hike back involves a long, steep climb out of the valley, which can be physically demanding. Once back on the plateau, the trail gradually leads you back to the starting point.

The route was muddy and slippery from recent rains, so a trekking pole came in handy. My preferred Merrell hiking boots kept me comfortable, handling the rocky and challenging terrain with ease. 

Sun protection and sun screen are needed as the Lowveld can get extremely hot. Energy snacks and hydration are always needed.
