Tsitsikamma
Day 3 was upon us, and everybody was up early preparing coffee and breakfast. We were blessed with an amazing sunrise, and we knew today we would be heading even deeper into the Tsitsikamma mountains and forest. The true sense of isolation began to take hold.
13,4km trail on offer
Moderate and scenic route
Merrell Hiking Boots, water shoes, a trekking pole, hydration, sunscreen, a hat and energy snacks
We began our hike, heading along the path through a fynbos-rich area called 'Ouveldrug'. After a few kilometres, we entered 'Buffelsbos', where the last buffalo of the Tsitsikamma was shot and killed in 1886. In this eerie and enchanted patch of indigenous forest, the trail begins its eastward course through the mountains. We then crossed the Bloukrans River at Waterwitelsgat before taking a rest at this marvellous swimming spot. The rest of the trail is predominantly flat terrain through flower-rich fynbos and forest. Shortly before reaching the Keurbos Hut, rockpools resemble natural jacuzzis.
Follow The RouteWater shoes are essential for river crossings, and a trekking pole was needed to help with balance. Hydration is essential, although there are many streams to fill up along the way. Sunscreen, hat, and energy snacks are vital, and my preferred Merrell boots handled the slippery rocks and trail with ease.
Join Our Hiking ClubThe Keurbos Hut is situated deep in the damp Keurbos forest. Upon arrival at a hut, the donkey was lit to prepare hot water for a well-deserved shower. We had a traditional South African braai before heading off to bed. Another epic day and new memories not to be forgotten!
