Pretoria
Voetstoetshiking ventured out to explore another Pretoria gem, Faerie Glen Nature Reserve. This reserve offers it all, from rocky ridges and a flowing stream to open grasslands, a bird hide, and stunning views of the city skyline.
2,3km; 3,2km & 4,2km trails on offer
Moderate and scenic route
Merrell hiking boots; trekking pole; adequate hydration and snacks
We set off from the reception area and almost immediately started ascending a concrete path towards the lookout point on Faerie Glen Hill. We admired the view for a few minutes before continuing along the ridge route.
We followed the contour path and soon found ourselves descending Rooihartebees Ridge. The trail leads you through the fairy-tale wood and links up with the Moreleta Spruit. We followed the spruit, crossed a wooden bridge, and settled in at the bird hide, admiring the beauty of the reserve.
The trail continues along the spruit, passing the picnic spot and finishing soon afterwards.
Follow The Route
Sections of the trail are rocky, so a trekking pole could come in handy. Our preferred Merrell hiking boots were comfortable and handled the challenging terrain with ease. Although the trails are short, energy snacks and hydration are recommended, as the climb will get one’s heart rate racing.
Join Our Hiking ClubAlthough the reserve was particularly busy, we still managed to spot zebra. Faerie Glen Nature Reserve has beautiful scenery and is perfect for a quick hike, trail run, or just a relaxing day out with friends and family. With its combination of wildlife, sweeping views, and peaceful surroundings, this is definitely another Pretoria East gem.
