Drakensberg
Voetstoetshiking ventured out to explore gems like Gudu Falls, the Crack, Mahai Falls, and Cascades, all found in the Royal Natal National Park, Northern Drakensberg.
22km hike on offer
Moderate to challenging route
Merrell hiking boots, trekking pole, sun protection, hydration & snacks
We had an early start, heading past Plowman’s Kop en route to Gudu Falls. The ascent to the falls is a tough climb, but after some heavy breathing, the final reward is well worth the effort.
After soaking in the magic of the falls, we began the descent, crossing the Gudu River and heading towards the Crack. At the trail marker leading up to the Crack, the route toughens, with a steep, relentless ascent that at times requires hands-on scrambling. Throw in a chain ladder, and you’ll soon find yourself rewarded with sweeping views of the Amphitheatre and beyond.
We set off in search of Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge - the perfect setting for a snack and a refreshment. After our break, we continued steadily down the Mahai Valley, stopping again at the stunning Mahai Falls. We followed the trail, crossing the Mahai River and eventually rejoining the path towards the lookout rock.
The downhill stretch to Cascades can be hard on the knees, but a refreshing dip in the pools is a well-deserved reward.
The final stretch to the parking area follows the Mahai River past the campsite.
