It’s wonderful to live in our little corner of Africa where we can go for a walk with the wildlife whenever we choose. This walk with the zebra was a very special experience. There are two routes, a red and a blue route, operated by the JBay Zebra Lodge. Both trails are loop trails starting from the lodge.
The trail first took us down the hill and into the shady bush where we saw tortoises and sunbirds. As we meandered back up to the hilltop, we had views of the Baviaanskloof Mountains on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. Returning to the start we walked near a whole herd of zebra as they like to congregate on the large grassy hills near the lodge.
We ended our hike with a hearty cooked breakfast at the lodge while the zebra grazed just outside the dining room doors.
Follow The Route
This trail has almost 200m of elevation. You might want to bring some binoculars for some game spotting. It can get pretty hot in the bush so it’s good to know that the Merrell trail runners are both breathable and supportive.
Join Our Hiking ClubThe trail is marked but we found it helpful to use our GPS navigation apps. There is a large network of trails in the area so at each intersection we checked our apps to be sure we were still on the Zebra Lodge property. The trail network is popular with mountain bikes as well.
For bookings and permits contact JBay Zebra Lodge on 078 9256812. They often run a hiker’s special on weekends where you can hike and get a delicious breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for R200. To hike only it is R50.
