Lower Guineafowl Trail

By Suzanna Pautz - Take A Walk Hiking Club

Gqeberha

The Baakens River flows through Port Elizabeth, passing through Settlers Park, named after the 1820 British settlers to the area. Our walk crisscrosses the lower river.

Route:

We started this out-and-back trail from Bridge Street Brewery in the lower Baakens Valley. The Brewery also served as a good stop for a refreshing cold drink at the end of our hike.

It’s a pretty easy and flat trail following the river upstream to Target Kloof. We had a large group with us, which is always beneficial as there is safety in numbers. Stick close to the river, and you can’t go wrong. There are steppingstones at every river crossing, so unless there has been torrential rain, your feet can stay dry at every turn.

When we finished 2.5km, we rested next to the Baakens River, ate our snacks, and took photos of the abundant birdlife. After this quick stop, we turned around and headed back the way we came.

Field Notes:

It is generally a shady trail with large coral trees and ferns close to the river. The path can get muddy in the shady sections, so good shoes like the Merrell Agility Peaks will provide the stability you need.

Trail Log:

The trail is not marked, but it is well established. In parts, it is a jeep track and other times a gravel path. Many trails are joined from the hills above, down to the river, so be sure to stay on the lower path. Walk in a large group for safety. Dogs are allowed. There is no cost and no permits required.
