Challenging trail with spectacular views

Merrell hiking boots; hiking stick; sunscreen; adequate hydration and snacks

Route:

We opted for the 10km 360° view trail and hoped our early start would provide us with sightings of Cape vultures. The trail led us on a gradual ascent up the slope of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range. We made our way to the first summit, having stopped a few times to catch our breath. The trail is challenging and has two summits, with an elevation gain of 527m. Once we reached the top, the panoramic views of the Hartbeespoort area were truly spectacular and right on cue, a kettle of Cape vultures was soaring past on rising thermals, searching for food. After a break, we made our descent back down the trail towards the lodge.

Field Notes:

It was a beautiful sunny winter's day, so sunscreen protection is always needed. A hiking stick is recommended, especially for the descent. My preferred Merrell hiking boots provided comfort and stability whilst navigating the rocky terrain. Hydration and energy snacks are also needed.
