Skeerpoort
Voetstoetshiking ventured out to explore the newly opened trail at Remhoogte Mountain Lodge, situated in Skeerpoort near Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West Province. Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Magaliesberg, this trail offers a rewarding challenge for hikers looking to test their fitness and technical ability.
5km, 6km and 8km routes on offer
Scenic but strenuous route
Merrell hiking boots; trekking pole; sturdy gloves; sunscreen; adequate hydration and snacks
Our hike began at The Farm Shed, following a scenic bushveld path towards the slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain range. The 5km and 6km routes branch off along the way, while the demanding 8km trail continues into a steep gully that leads to a spectacular viewpoint on top of the ridge. The ascent through the gully is the highlight of the route, requiring plenty of scrambling, careful foot placement, and a good level of fitness. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside before the technical descent back down the same gully. Once safely back on the lower section, we rejoined the 6km trail and made our way towards the lodge, spotting a herd of blesbok and numerous cows grazing peacefully along the route.
Follow The Route
My preferred Merrell hiking boots provided the grip and traction needed to confidently tackle the rocky gully. A trekking pole is highly recommended, along with a sturdy pair of gloves to improve grip on the rocks and fixed ropes. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and sun protection, especially during the warmer months.
Join Our Hiking ClubAfter the hike, The Farm Shed provides the perfect place to relax with a delicious meal and refreshing drink while enjoying the peaceful farm atmosphere.
