By Voets Toets Hiking

Drakensberg

Voetstoetshiking ventured off to the Royal Natal National Park for another adventure-packed weekend. Tucked beneath the towering cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg, the Sunday Falls trail is one of those hikes that quietly delivers. It's easy, scenic, and enjoyable.

Easy and scenic route

Merrell hiking boots; sunscreen; sun protection; adequate hydration and snacks

Route:

We set off from the hikers parking area, close to the Mahai campsite, making our way into the berg. The trail is mostly flat and easygoing while being treated to rolling hills, towering cliffs, and the Amphitheatre in the distance.

Once we passed Castle Rock ridge, it wasn't long before we headed down towards an indigenous forest. We crossed the stream and made our way down to the bottom of the falls. Sunday Falls is a calm, intimate waterfall, where hiking boots come off without thinking, and time slows down completely. We had a picnic and a refreshing swim at this hidden gem before heading back to our starting point.

Field Notes:

This is a true beginner friendly hike, suitable for kids or casual hikers. Our preferred Merrell hiking boots provided comfort and support while navigating the trail. Sunscreen and sun protection are always recommended as well as sufficient hydration and snacks.

Trail Log:

The Sunday Falls trail is not about chasing altitude or distance, but it's about slowing down and soaking in the berg. It's one of those hikes that reminds us why we started hiking, with stream crossings, indigenous forests, the Amphitheatre in the background, and, of course, a charming waterfall. Royal Natal National Park has a wide variety of trails, and Sunday Falls should definitely be on your list next time you visit.
