Schoenmakerskop

This is the gold standard of trails, The sea air, crashing waves, rolling sand dunes and rock pools abundant with life make it one of the best coastal walks in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.

5km or 7.5km trails offered

Not a well-marked trail, however, very easy to navigate

Route:

The trail starts at the western edge of the small village of Schoenmakerskop. There is a salvaged cannon from a Portuguese ship, The Sacramento, that was wrecked off the coast at this spot in 1647. Next to the cannon is a trail head sign with a route map. It’s a good idea to take a photo as the trail is not marked. However this is such a popular trail the ground is well walked and it’s clear to see where the path is.

Less than 100m onto the trail there is a fork. If you go right (heading inland) you will do a loop of 7.5km following the top of the fynbos covered dunes, coming out at Sardinia Bay beach. From the top of a large sand dune you would run down (who walks down sand dunes?) to the sea and walk back along the beach to where you started.

If you go left at the fork (towards the sea) you would walk out along the beach trail for 2.5km and when you reach Sardinia Bay beach you can turn back the way you came for 2.5km.

Field Notes:

The majority of the trail is on a sandy path or beach walking. There are sections of rocky path, large beach pebbles and rocky sections along the shore where you would need shoes with solid soles like the Vibram soles on most Merrells.

Trail Log:

Go for a swim, pack a picnic, do some whale watching and dolphin spotting, take in the sea to sky vistas. This trail has so much to offer in every season of the year. Dogs on leads are permitted. There is no cost. Walk in a group for safety, especially if you are taking the inland loop route.

If you want to grab something to eat or drink before or after the Sacramento Restaurant is just a stones throw away in the village.
