Port Elizabeth
We can’t help but unwind as we take a walk around the seaside village of Schoenmakerskop. Here, time slows down to a holiday’s pace and the sound of the sea soothes our souls.
4km trail on offer
Short and easy trail
Merrell Hiking shoes; swimming gear and sun protection
This short trail has something for everyone. People of all fitness can join because at almost any point along our route you can take a short cut back to the start pretty quickly. We walked a loop from the main beach car park, where the toilets are. We headed east along the coast to Periwinkle Lane, then along the main road to the jeep track behind the strip of houses at Schoenmakerskop.
Here’s where the trail gets interesting, this small section behind the houses is known as Retha’s trail and the residents have planted succulent gardens along the route. There are decorations, plaques of remembrance and interesting statues that tell a story of the people who live here.
The trail continues to the famous Sacramento Canon and then we drop down to the ocean and follow from cove to cove, hopping over boulders and skipping over muddy sections until we are back at the main beach staircase, back up to the parking area.
Follow The Route
There is no official route map. But there are paths along the coast that are well trodden. We love to end the walk with a swim at the main beach gully.
You need shoes with good grip especially for the rocky coastal sections. We trust our Merrell Agility Peaks to do the job.
There is no shade along this beachy trail, so be sure to bring sun protection.
Join Our Hiking ClubParking is free and dogs are allowed. There are bathrooms at the main beach parking area. There is only one shop in Schoenmakerskop; the Sacramento Restaurant.
