Modderfontein

Voetstoetshiking ventured out to explore Taroko Trail Park, situated in the Modderfontein Reserve, a stone's throw away from Johannesburg's bustling suburbs.

5km and 11km route on offer

Beginner

Easy, flat and well-marked trail

Merrell hiking boots; adequate hydration and energy snacks

Route:

The trail is well marked, taking you through the reserve's grasslands and alongside picturesque dams, namely Grebe Dam, Fish Eagle Dam, and Blue Crane Dam. There is also a bird hide along the route, where we stopped for a break, watching the birdlife that frequents the reserve. The trail is mostly flat and winds through a diverse landscape of wetlands and veld. We passed a waterfall near the end of the route, just as the Gautrain sped past not far away.

Field Notes:

The trail is easy and suitable for beginners, families, and trail runners. Our preferred Merrell hiking boots provided comfort and handled the terrain with ease. Energy snacks and hydration are always recommended.
