Voets Toets Hiking ventured out to explore the Cradlemoon Conservancy, a nature reserve not far from Johannesburg. We made our way to our destination, Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge, to take on THE ZWARTKOP SUMMIT.

Route:
Our hike started with a briefing from the guide about the journey ahead. We made our way to the Frans Richter Dam Wall, where we were welcomed with a beautiful rainbow across the falls. The first part of the trail is flat and took us through the bushveld, where we saw plenty of game and majestic giraffe. We could also see the Swartkop mountain in the distance, welcoming us to a tough but beautiful journey.
The ascent was rocky and technical at times, but the view of Cradlemoon conservancy at the top was worth it! We made our way down the back of the mountain, where we entered a challenging kloof with chain descent. We made our way back to reception with pride as we had conquered a difficult route.

Our preferred Merrell boots gave us the stability and grip needed for the steep ascents and descents. A hiking stick is recommended, as well as sunscreen, adequate hydration, and snacks to keep you going for the long-distance route.

The trail is technical, and a good level of fitness is required. The views from the Zwartkop summit were spectacular, and we spotted loads of wildlife on our adventure. The venue has accommodation, as well as many activities, such as hiking, MTB trails, trail running, paddle, swimming, and fly fishing. Game drives are also available, as well as two restaurants on site.
