By Voets Toets Hiking

Johannesburg

The first-ever Merrell Urban Hike in Johannesburg was Voetstoetshiking's next adventure! We explored the streets of Johannesburg in a whole new way. Think of street corners alive with art, city vibes, tall buildings, and a city abuzz. We felt as if we were exploring the heartbeat of Braamfontein.

Magical and easy hike

Merrell shoes; sunscreen; a hat and hydration

Route:

Our guide, Peter Geach, took us on a magical urban journey. Our first stop was at the 'Eland', an art piece created by Clive van den Berg. We then passed the Holy Trinity Church before stopping to admire some of Hannelie Coetzee's mosaic artwork. We proceeded on, mesmerised by Malik's street graffiti depicting a 'Giggling Hyena', and Falko's 'Elephants'. We followed Juta Street, where we saw a steel forest of 26 metal trees.

After some exploring, we headed to Milner Park Hotel, built in 1888, which still houses Kitcheners, Johannesburg's second oldest bar. Next, we climbed thirteen flights of stairs to reach the rooftop basketball court, where we were rewarded with stunning views of the Johannesburg skyline, Nelson Mandela Bridge, and the old train station.

After a break, we made our way down the stairs and visited the Nzunza portrait, a beautiful building artwork, by local artist Hannelie Coetzee. We visited the threshold of justice and the Constitutional Court, where the flame of democracy burns steadily. Our adventure ended at Indwe Park.

Field Notes:

Our preferred Merrell shoes gave us the comfort and support needed to navigate the pavements and streets of downtown Johannesburg. Sunscreen and sun protection are always a must, whether in the bush, mountains, or city.
