Machadodorp
Our next adventure was at Wathaba Hiking Trails, situated in the heart of the Skurweberg mountains, near Machadodorp in Mpumalanga. This venue is a hiker's dream, with its pristine wilderness, cascading waterfalls, rich biodiversity, and serene kloof scenery.
10km trail on offer
Moderate to difficult trails
Merrell Hiking Boots, adequate hydration, sunscreen, a hat, energy snacks and a trekking pole (recommended)
The trail begins at the parking area and follows the Schoonspruit River, featuring multiple waterfalls, crystal clear pools, and indigenous forests along the route. Lana Pools is your first stop, after which you'll have several rustic bridge crossings before passing Fertility Falls, Varingval, and Kiepersolval. Once out of the forest, you'll make your way through Lynx Valley before ascending the mountainside en route to Wimpies' viewpoint. We then made our way to the Yellowwood Forest, and not long after, we arrived at the majestic Cascades waterfall, a series of tumbling rock shelves where water rushes and churns before heading downstream. We continued along the trail to Fairy Falls, and not long afterwards, we were descending the mountainside back towards the parking area.
Follow The Route
A trekking pole came in handy when navigating slippery crossings. Hydration is essential, although there were many spots to fill up along the way. Sunscreen, hat, and energy snacks are vital, and my preferred Merrell hiking boots handled the slippery rocks and trail with ease.
Join Our Hiking ClubAfter settling into our accommodation, we lit the donkey for hot water and prepared ourselves for the evening. We had a hearty braai and discussed the day's events with a few cold ones before heading off to bed for a well-deserved rest. An epic day and new memories not to be forgotten.
