Merrell hiking boots; trekking pole and adequate hydration

Route:

The trail starts and ends at the iconic Wonderboom Fig Tree, renowned for its enormous canopy and unique circle of daughter trunks. From there, the route climbs steadily up the Magaliesberg mountainside to the entrance of Fort Wonderboompoort, built in 1897 by the South African Republic (ZAR) to help defend Pretoria.

After taking time to explore the fascinating fort ruins, the trail descends along a rocky path back towards the picnic area. Along the way, a side trail branches off from the main route, leading to a small waterfall and cave if you're keen to explore a little more.

Field Notes:

The trail has some steep inclines that will get the heart pumping. Our preferred Merrell hiking boots provided comfort and handled the terrain with ease. A trekking pole is recommended, especially for the rocky descent. Although it's a short trail, hydration is always a must.
